Ben Zweig 514 Quartet

Jazz drummer and composer, Ben Zweig, “is able to combine history with the current musical environment, making it sound fresh” (Don Sickler). A NYC native, the 26 year old has accompanied an impressive array of jazz luminaries, including; Randy Weston, Johnny O’Neal, Larry Ridley, David Williams, Roy Hargrove, Deborah Davis, Jerry Dodgion, Harold Mabern, Jane Monheit, and Joe Cohn. Described by downbeat as “especially crisp and articulate,” Zweig has toured with jazz artists throughout the continental US, Asia and Canada. When at home, Ben can be found performing nearly every night in NYC as a sideman with both seasoned older and younger contemporary band leaders, as well as leading his own groups at popular jazz haunts such as Smalls, Mezzrow, and Smoke.

Having performed at Upstairs with a myriad of Montreal mainstays; Laura Anglade, Sam Kirmayer, Andres Vial, and Ali Levy, this is the premier performance of Zweig’s “514 Quartet”, featuring local great Kevin Dean on the trumpet. This performance also features Ben Rosenblum on piano (whom Zweig has toured with regularly since 2011), and Johnny Chapman on bass. The band will be playing classic nostalgic swing charts, groovy Brazilian melodies, and quirky original tunes that are light-hearted and danceable.
