Yordan Martinez

For the first time at Upstairs, Yordan “trombone” Martinez from The Cuban Martinez Show is offering a special concert for the occasion. He will perfrom with is quintet and 4 exceptional musicians: “Mistysa” our “special guest” singer and others musicians from renowned cuban orchestra recently moved in Montreal as Neisy Wilson (from Mezcla) on voice and piano, Dayan Sailoman (from Arnaldo y su Talisman) on congas, and Yojan Vargas-Rodriguez on the bass. The will present a unique show under the influence of Cuban music, latin music and jazz!

Cuban native trombone player and artistic director, Yordan Martinez studied music in Cuba, as well as completing his degree in jazz interpretation at Université de Montréal. His experience includes a spot as trombone player with Cuban jazz orchestra KLIMAX, led by legendary percussionist Giraldo Piloto.

Here in Montreal Martinez has shared the stage with artists as Michel Legrand, Bran Van 3000, Oliver Jones and Vic Vogel. He has also recorded with Chucho Valdés, Jose Lui Quintana "Changuito", Edwin Bonilla (Gloria Estafan's percusionist) and many more.

In February 2010, Martinez starts the Cuban Martinez Show and participates in the festival Montreal en lumière. A year later in may 2011, he is awarded de Syli d'Or world music award, which he shares with his ten-member orchestra.

Since then Yordan Martinez has been a very prolific music director, both with his quintet and ten-member orchestra, playing and composing a variety of styles, ranging from traditional Cuban music, salsa, funk and latin jazz. He remains a very creative and talented member of the Montreal world-music scene!
