Vocalist Paul Marinaro, dubbed as having “one of the most beautiful vocal instruments in the business today” by Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune, is a modern classic. With Chicago as his home base, Paul has become one of the most in-demand and respected male vocalists and has “taken his place among the top five male jazz singers active today.” (Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene)
Paul’s latest album, Not Quite Yet released on October 28, 2022 and along with some beloved staples in Marinaro’s performance repertoire (Taking a Chance on Love, On A Wonderful Day Like Today, Someone To Light Up My Life), a couple compositions from David Bowie and Paul’s recorded debut of original lyrics (set to Ary Barroso’s É Luxo Só and released as Searching) gave audiences a chance to see a different side of the singer they have grown to love. GRAMMY Award-winning journalist Neil Tesser says of his project: “Marinaro has made the album he needed to hear at a crucial point in our shared history – an entirely personal album, that many others will need to hear too.” Not Quite Yet launched at Chicago’s stunning Studebaker Theatre.

The brainchild of Brazilian bassist João Menegale Barbi, Zabumbe is made up of five young adults from Montréal. Thomas Vigneras, originally from France, can be seen gigging often on the Montréal salsa and latin music scene. Jazz, pop, and rock venues are home to the in-demand guitarist and composer Alex Muscalu. His beautiful lines and tasteful musical choices make any performance a fascinating journey. João Menegale Barbi arrived in Canada in 2021 from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to study with Adrian Vedady. He has made a name for himself as both a bassist and “everyone’s best friend”. The final member of Zabumbe, flutist Adelina Steinmetz, adds a vibrant musical layer to the quintet. Her first gig in Montréal entailed improvising to bird sounds while wearing a bird hat on the banks of the Lachine Canal.
All four members currently study in the jazz program at McGill University. Under the guidance of the great percussionist João Catalão, Zabumbe has refined a repertoire of traditional Brazilian pieces ranging from baiãos to sambas.

Code Quartet is excited to release their sophomore album CODE RED. They are a powerhouse collective of four of Canada’s leading jazz improvisers and composers based out of Montreal. It includes trumpeter Lex French, alto and soprano saxophonist Christine Jensen, and the indestructible pillars of time and groove, Adrian Vedady on bass and Jim Doxas on drums.
Jensen has received multiple JUNO awards for her output, along with other accolades. Vedady and Doxas have lent their artistry to some of the world’s great jazz artists, including Carla Bley, Dave Douglas, Oliver Jones and Marc Copland. French is a bright star and leader of his own music on the Canadian jazz scene after a marked career in New Zealand. The quartet features original compositions that draw from each member’s unique background, depicting many moods and creating an organic dialogue. Their soundscape is diverse and refined, resulting in an exciting and engaging listening experience. They lean hard into jazz essentials of blues and swing, perfectly introducing their individual virtues.

Composed of a quintet of thriving musicians, the members of “The Experience” have been making big splashes across the Montreal jazz scene. The group initially met at McGill University and quickly began to combine their love for many different styles of music, from old school jazz of the 50s and 60s to the complex R&B styles of today, all with an abundance of creativity and an iron-clad work ethic. Performing original and reworked tunes written by each of the members, the quintet consists of alto saxophonist Mia-Lin Gromko, trombonist Eric Dubé, pianist Julian Shively, drummer Loïc Du Sablon, and bassist and ever-so-wholesome MC Ben Renert.
With each musician holding a strong musical background ranging from jazz to rock to classical music, and plenty of experience to go around, they work together to elevate each other and form a unique and powerful sound that astounds and challenges the common conception of what jazz can be.

Event Details
‘In the World’s First Summer’ marks the debut recording of New Zealand-Canadian jazz trumpet player Lex French on the Justin Time label. Hailed by Radio Canada jazz critic Stanley Pean as “an extraordinary trumpeter”, he is fast becoming a bright star on the Canadian jazz scene, and is a highly in-demand composer and arranger.
This project takes inspiration from Miles Davis’s seminal second quintet in its approach, a group that has influenced so many musicians over the last 50 years. “When I was about 16 years old, in 1998 or ’99, I bought a copy of Miles Davis’1967 album, Miles Smiles,” says French, “and was immediately captivated. Ever since that first listen, I’ve wanted to lead a group that followed in the footsteps of Miles’s seminal second quintet”.
Joining are François Bourassa (piano), Morgan Moore (bass), and Jim Doxas (drums), all of whom are improvising musicians of the highest order who bring their individual and personal approaches to the music but also function as members of the group in order to create a whole that is great than the sum of its parts.

Legendary tenor saxophonist and composer Billy Harper makes a rare Montreal appearance at Upstairs with the Andrés Vial Trio, featuring pianist and composer Andrés Vial, great bassist Ira Coleman and powerhouse drummer Darrell Green.
Billy Harper’s massive sound on the tenor saxophone combines John Coltrane’s spiraling intensity with a bluesy brawn that points back to his Texas origins. As the greatest living Texas tenor his authority has only grown with age: a half-century on, he stands as one of the most commanding horn men on the planet, a pillar of stirring post-bop jazz whose robust back catalog seems long overdue for rediscovery.
While Billy Harper contributed immensely throughout the years to many legendary jazz lineups (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan Quintet, Max Roach Quartet, Gil Evans Orchestra, Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra, Randy Weston’s African Rhythms) there is no greater legacy he has bestowed upon the world than the 50+ years of music created for and with the Billy Harper Quintet, a complete and perfect incarnation of his musical and spiritual identity.

Pianist and composer Kate Wyatt has been praised as having “musical ideas and a style of playing and writing that is on par with the current jazz piano elite: Mehldau, Yaron Herman, Shai Maestro, Fred Hersch.”, and has been hailed as “one of the top artists of Montreal, Quebec, or even Canadian jazz.” (Cardin/Brunet, panm360.com). Her recent debut album “Artifact” was released to overwhelmingly excellent critical reviews, and was featured on “Best Jazz of 2022” lists from Canada, the US and Europe.
For this very special evening of music Kate invites multiple Juno award-winning Toronto-based saxophonist and composer Kelly Jefferson to join her in performing a selection of original compositions and music from the Great American Songbook.
“[Kelly Jefferson’s] muscular playing, eloquence and range of emotion, and versatility
justify his popularity. — Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen
