Featuring special guest artist Canadian flute legend and W.S. Haynes Artist Bill McBirnie from Toronto who is making his debut appearance and performance in Edmonton and Western Canada, Horace Silver Flutes reimagines the trumpet and tenor pairings of Horace Silver’s compositions from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, giving power to the jazz notion two flutes are indeed better than one.
Horace Silver was known to incorporate flute on several recordings including “The Jody Grind” and “Silver n Brass”. One may be hard pressed to find precedent of two flutes (with rhythm section) recorded in jazz. There are two: namely the Sam Most-Joe Farrell and Herbie Mann – Bobby Jasper tandems, and of course Flutology, the group of Frank Wess, Holly Hoffmann, and Ali Ryerson. This particular tandem of Bill McBirnie and Jeremy Price began performing in 2019 but was on hiatus until the summer of 2022 when a set of Horace Silver’s music was performed for the Saturday Jazz patrons of the Pilot Tavern in Toronto.
