Tuesday evenings, Upstairs showcases McGill University’s Schulich School of Music Undergraduate, and Graduate, Jazz Performance students.

As part of their jazz combo course requirements, students prepare sets of music encompassing tunes and arrangements from the jazz tradition, as well as, original compositions and arrangements. These students, coming from all over North America, and Europe, are some of the finest up and coming jazz performance students that you will hear anywhere.

One of Canada’s most sought after musicians, Jim Doxas plays extensively both nationally and overseas. Distinguished for his improvisational approach to jazz, he makes the case that percussion can be as performative as a lyrical instrument.

Since its formation in 2014, Fuel Junkie has revealed itself as one of the most promising upcoming artists on the Montréal blues scene. Passionate about the blues at a very young age, Mark LeClerc founded the group with close friends met during his music studies. Singer and composer of the band, he came up with the idea of a saxophone section brought to the spotlight by modern arrangements.

Grounded in the blues, Fuel Junkie is also strongly influenced by funk and soul music. The combination of a classic trio with three saxophones gives the band its unique identity that stands out on the blues scene. Creative interaction between the band members during solo sections make way for unexpected and standout moments at every concert. The group is known by its fans for the constant flow of energy and authenticity during every performance.

Winner of a Juno award ,the Montreal International Jazz Festival competition & 2nd prize at the world renowned Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, Canadian Jazz pianist and film composer, James Gelfand, has performed at numerous jazz festivals and clubs around the world, notably in Switzerland, France, Italy. Germany, the United States, and Canada. He has performed on over 40 albums, including 10 as leader and composer, with his latest Album “Ground Midnight” being
nominated for best Jazz album at ADISQ.

He will be performing his original arrangements of well known Xmas songs.

By day, Colin Hunter is the Founding President of the Sunwing Travel Group. By night, Colin pursues his passion for music. A huge fan of the 1950s crooner-jazz repertoire, he has launched a few CDs and has hit the stage many times with the ever-talented vocal singer Kim Richardson, not to mention his upbeat performances at the Salle Astral, House of Jazz, Upstairs Jazz Bar and Capitole de Québec. This entrepreneur–crooner is proving that following your passion can indeed take you anywhere!

Singer and composer Emma McDonald has been making waves in a variety of different music scenes since she can remember. Starting her studies at the early age of 3, she has starred in a number of productions by the Michigan Opera, performed in 50+ musical productions across the U.S. and Canada, won top vocalist at Warner Bros. Studios in LA, and performed at Carnegie Hall at only 14 years old.

Since coming to Montreal, she has immersed herself in her jazz studies at McGill University and has since become a leading musician in the city, leaning into her love of R&B and neo-soul.

Julian Shively is a virtuosic pianist and cellist whose artistry spans a wide range of genres and influences. A graduate of McGill University with degrees in both jazz piano and classical cello, Julian’s musical experience has taken him across the globe, performing in a wide array of musical settings from serving as principal cello with orchestras traveling in Western Europe and China, to collaborating with jazz ensembles in the United States and The Bahamas, to performing as a featured soloist with 9 different orchestras.

Julian has developed a reputation for his versatility and technical prowess with an affinity for jazz and classical music (as well as a love for R&B and impressionist music) creating a dynamic and eclectic sound world. Julian invites you to experience an evening of original compositions and arrangements that reflect his unique creative journey. Born in 1965 in Newport, Vermont into a musical family with an English mother and a French-Canadian father, Mike Goudreau picked up his first guitar at age 14 and hasn’t stopped playing since.

Taurey Butler is a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre.

Hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, he has played in numerous cities across the world from Hong Kong to New York and now makes his home in Montréal. Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.

Jeff Moseley & The Django Messengers is a jazz quintet strongly influenced by the masters of the swing era. The ensemble proposes a journey in the repertoire of the great Django Reinhardt in which the musicians add a modern hard-bop flavour inspired by the music of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers.

The Clarinet and the violin harmonize the avant-garde melodies of Django while the manouche guitar, the upright bass and the drums lay down an energetic swing feel. The five musicians improvise using jazz language spanning from the Hot-Club de France to the bebop of New-York.

Rachel has presented her Latin Jazz project in many different formats since 2009 with compositions and arrangements tinted with many musical influences from different Latin-American and Caribbean countries. After living in Cuba, studying at the Instituto Supérior de Arte in Havana Cuba in 2008 and having a multitude of experiences with many latin music groups, Therrien founded her own project to play the music of the cultures she’s so passionate about.

Sophianne Girard is a young jazz singer and composer from Montreal. Even as a child, she sang her heart out. She performed in a choir, then in a musical theater troupe, and eventually specialized as a soloist and composer while studying at CEGEP* Marie-Victorin and McGill University in the jazz program.

Her first album, For Some Reason, was released in the fall of 2022. She performed at FestiJazz of Mont-Tremblant in the Relève section and at T.U.JazzFest in Toronto in the summer of 2022. She’s one of the three finalists of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (worldwide composition competition), with her song For Some Reason, in the Jazz category. She also released a live album EP titled Live at Opus Studios in January 2023. She’s currently working on her second album. Sophianne has her own musical esthetic. Her compositions are mostly modern and modal.

This summer she’ll perform at the Festival Québec Jazz en Juin, at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal where she’ll open for John Pizzarelli, at the Théâtre Maisonneuve and at various venues in the province of Québec.

Sophianne’s bright and clear voice has a ”je ne sais quoi” that leaves you wanting more!

Toto De la Ossa is a guitarist and singer who completed his master’s studies in jazz performance at McGill University last December. During his master’s degree, he focused on his latest musical project entitled “Songs from Within.” It is a collection of songs, presented in quartet format, which is the fruit of the experiences and meetings of Toto de la Ossa in Montreal. He is part of the aesthetic of modern jazz, with influences of hard bop, funk and traditional music from his country of origin, Colombia.

Accompanied by an exceptional rhythm section made up of students and graduates from the McGill master’s program, “Songs from Within” presents each of his songs as small stories that attempt to reflect some of the experiences and emotions he experienced at over the last two years in Montreal.

Guillaume Martineau has pursued many years of professional studies in classical piano. Guillaume as a classical pianist received many honors including winning first prize at the Canadian Music Competion in 2009 and the opportunity to be heard playing Chopin in the recent movie “Louis Cyr”.

At the age of 13, Guillaume made his first attempts in jazz as a classical pianist with introduction from bassist Éric Lagacé. Over ten years later, Guillaume meets Éric Lagacé once again together with Oliver Jones and finally decides to make a diving transition into the world of jazz. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Guillaume is now very active on Montreal’s music scene in many unique projects of his own.

The album Piece of Mind is the fifth album by French pianist Simon Denizart in collaboration with one of the most prestigious jazz labels in North America, Justin Time Records.

Surrounded by musicians recognized both on the national and international scene with whom he has collaborated for many years, Simon offers us an orchestral work in eight scenes which offers a powerful and introspective journey into his musical universe.

‘In the World’s First Summer’ marks the debut recording of New Zealand-Canadian jazz trumpet player Lex French on the Justin Time label. Hailed by Radio Canada jazz critic Stanley Pean as “an extraordinary trumpeter”, he is fast becoming a bright star on the Canadian jazz scene, and is a highly in-demand composer and arranger.

This project takes inspiration from Miles Davis’s seminal second quintet in its approach, a group that has influenced so many musicians over the last 50 years. “When I was about 16 years old, in 1998 or ’99, I bought a copy of Miles Davis’1967 album, Miles Smiles,” says French, “and was immediately captivated. Ever since that first listen, I’ve wanted to lead a group that followed in the footsteps of Miles’s seminal second quintet”.

Joining are François Bourassa (piano), Morgan Moore (bass), and Jim Doxas (drums), all of whom are improvising musicians of the highest order who bring their individual and personal approaches to the music but also function as members of the group in order to create a whole that is great than the sum of its parts.

A musical journey to New Orleans from the 20s to the 40s is what Masson Stomp is all about: Traditional Jazz and Swing. Masson Stomp will make you rediscover many great world-renowned tunes interpreted by its musicians in their original, modern and unique way.

For their first album, the band’s artistic vision was to be close to the jazz tradition but also contributing to the repertoire by adding original compositions.

The Adema Manoukas Octet is an energetic eight-piece ensemble co-led by Nick Adema and Alex Manoukas. All of the band members attended the University of Toronto together, and it was here where the band’s initial bond was formed. Over several years, that band has been regularly performing at the Rex Hotel in Toronto, performing a wide variety of arrangements to find the band’s sound.

Maracujá, the passion fruit, fell from its tree for the first time on the stage of the Montreal Casino in 2003. Since then, the group has become the incontestable standard bearer for Brazilian music in Montreal, with fans of their unique and energetic style that go well beyond the city’s Brazilian community.

At its core, their modern sound is born out of the tangible synergy between four musicians of various rich cultural heritage: singer Elie Haroun, bassist André Faleiros, drummer Sacha Daoud, and keyboardist John Sadowy.

In April 2016, Maracujá launched its first album, full to the brim with its recognizable melodic style. Their musical identity is unmistakeable, and their verve irresistible. The fruit is ripe, and the table is set. It’s Maracujá in bloom!

Juno is a 21-year-old bassist and composer, who’s energetic and musical perspective has led them to be an active member of the Canadian jazz scene. Since moving to Montreal in 2021, Juno has been involved in such projects as Kevin Dean and Friends, Reach Quartet, and the Jesse Cahill Trio, and has performed at such venues as Upstairs Jazz Bar (Montreal), Frankie’s Jazz Club (Vancouver) and at Mel Lastman Square (Toronto).

As a composer, Juno takes great influence from American folk music, and has premiered their works at TU Jazzfest and Upstairs Jazz Bar with various ensembles. Juno’s goal in their music is to make art that is simple, expressive, and honors the traditions of their heritage and the music they make.musique qu’ils créent.

Marianne Trudel is a multi-talented pianist, composer, improvisor, and arranger. At once energetic and passionate, her music cross-cuts a wide swath of musical interests.

As a performer, she pursues an active career in a variety of settings ranging from solo performance to duo, Trifolia, Marianne Trudel 4 + Ingrid Jensen, septet, and large ensembles. She has played in Canada, United States, Mexico, France, Spain, Germany, England, Scotland, Netherlands, Itlaly, Hungary, Lithuania, and China. She has published 6 recordings as a leader, all having garnered rave reviews.

Lady A’s musical journey began at the tender age of 5, when she first sang in the Greater Mt. Baker Missionary Baptist Church children’s choir. By 16, she had already become a musical church choir director, showcasing her natural talent and ear for harmony.

Today, Lady A is renowned for blending Soul, Gospel, and a touch of Funk into her performances, with storytelling at the core of her music. Her mission is clear: to inspire her audience, ensuring that no one leaves her performance unchanged. She hopes her lyrics resonate deeply, allowing her music to positively impact others.

Taurey Butler is a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre.

Hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, he has played in numerous cities across the world from Hong Kong to New York and now makes his home in Montréal. Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.

Jazz guitarist and composer, Carlos Jiménez is a sought-after musician and educator on the Montreal jazz scene. He has shared the stage with some of the most expressive names of Canadian jazz. His versatility and ability to play multiple styles on both electric and classical instruments has made him a first-choice guitarist for many recording and touring projects.

Along with his work as a sideman, Carlos Jiménez has produced and released four albums as a leader and has been involved in a variety of productions ranging from jazz, Brazilian music, and popular music. A recipient of both composition and recording grants, in 2009 he received a studying grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to study with American guitarist Adam Rogers, in New York. More recent projects include recording and touring with American award-winning jazz vocalist Ranee Lee, touring with Quebec singer Florence K for her new Brazilian music project, as well as producing his fifth album as a leader to be released in the Fall 2024. Carlos Jiménez is currently on faculty at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal, where he teaches jazz guitar, jazz ensembles and jazz improvisation. He holds a Doctorate degree in jazz performance.

Hailing from the lower west side of Montreal, Bharath Rajkumar delivers old school blues in an old school way, and never fails to entertain… Having shared stage and studio with some of the greatest blues musicians of our times, such as Junior watson, Fred Kaplan, Richard Innes, Larry Taylor, Johnny Dyer, Lazy Lester, Piano willie etc.

Danton Boller is a bassist, composer, producer, and educator in New York City. He has toured internationally and recorded with many top jazz artists as a member of the Roy Hargrove Quintet, Grammy nominated Roy Hargrove Big Band, Seamus Blake Quartet, Ari Hoenig’s “Punk Bop,” Willie Jones III Quartet, and the Grammy nominated Anthony Wilson Nonet, to name a few. During his time with Roy Hargrove, Danton was featured on two of Hargrove’s most popular albums – Earfood (RH Quintet) and Emergence (RH Big Band). Hargrove’s “Strasbourg St. Denis” opens with Danton’s captivating bass intro, and has gone on to become one of the best known new jazz standards around the world.
Danton’s 2023 release SPACE showcases his original compositions, arranging and producing. This debut album on his newly formed ONBO Records label features fellow Roy Hargrove Quintet alumni Justin Robinson, Willie Jones III, and Tadataka Unno, with the addition of John Ellis, Jeremy Wilms, and Yusuke Yamamoto.

Jacob Wutzke is a Montréal based drummer, bandleader, author, composer and music educator. Noted for his exceptional technique, creativity, and ability to listen and improvise in the moment, he is an in-demand sideman and bandleader in the jazz and creative music scenes.
A staple of the Canadian music scene, he has performed and recorded with Caity Gyorgy (2x JUNO Award Winner), Ira Coleman, Jocelyn Gould, Bryn Roberts, Pat LaBarbera, Sam Kirmayer and more. He has also self-published several drum method books that have become essential practice tools for drummers around the world, and leads a successful social media community.
Jacob has released 3 albums as a leader, and his latest release “You Better Bet” released on Cellar Music Group in January 2025.”
