Maracujá, the passion fruit, fell from its tree for the first time on the stage of the Montreal Casino in 2003. Since then, the group has become the incontestable standard bearer for Brazilian music in Montreal, with fans of their unique and energetic style that go well beyond the city’s Brazilian community.

At its core, their modern sound is born out of the tangible synergy between four musicians of various rich cultural heritage: singer Elie Haroun, bassist André Faleiros, drummer Sacha Daoud, and keyboardist John Sadowy.

In April 2016, Maracujá launched its first album, full to the brim with its recognizable melodic style. Their musical identity is unmistakeable, and their verve irresistible. The fruit is ripe, and the table is set. It’s Maracujá in bloom!

Rafael Salazar is a trumpet player/composer on the Montreal jazz scene. He is a competent improvisor with a soulful approach, taking influence from the masters of Black American Music and stylists of the instrument such as Kenny Dorham and Donald Byrd all the way to Roy Hargrove and Ambrose Akinmusire. He has been mentored by some of the finest musicians of both the Montreal and the NYC jazz scene. A recent graduate of the Schulich School of Music, McGill University. (As of May 2025)

Aiming to elevate each song through high energy performances and intense exchange of musical ideas, The Four Horsemen first met during their undergrads in Jazz Performance at McGill University, and, encouraged by their teachers and peers, continued playing together ever since. Influenced by traditional and modern jazz, they collectively believe in painting the song with different colors in each opportunity, getting inspired by each element that surrounds them and letting the ideas roam freely from their instruments.

Each member comes from very different backgrounds, playing different styles of music in their professional careers, and converging all that to create unique performances that promise to take the listeners to places they have never been before.

Taurey Butler is a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre.

Hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, he has played in numerous cities across the world from Hong Kong to New York and now makes his home in Montréal. Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Russell Hall migrated to the United States in 2007. Russell deeply understands the jazz tradition, having studied with many of the double bass world’s most renowned artists including Ron Carter and Ben Wolfe. He is also an artist looking forward with his own distinct approach to the double bass.
As a first-call bassist in New York City, Russell has performed with some of the biggest names in music including Joey Alexander, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Roy Hargrove, Kathleen Battle, Christian McBride, Emmet Cohen, Russell Malone, George Coleman and many more.
Well known for his work with the Emmet Cohen Trio alongside drummer Kyle Poole, Russell also leads his own bands, including Bessie and the Rainbowkids to much critical acclaim.

Jacob Wutzke is a Montréal based drummer, bandleader, author, composer and music educator. Noted for his exceptional technique, creativity, and ability to listen and improvise in the moment, he is an in-demand sideman and bandleader in the jazz and creative music scenes.
A staple of the Canadian music scene, he has performed and recorded with Caity Gyorgy (2x JUNO Award Winner), Ira Coleman, Jocelyn Gould, Bryn Roberts, Pat LaBarbera, Sam Kirmayer and more. He has also self-published several drum method books that have become essential practice tools for drummers around the world, and leads a successful social media community.

Recognized by Radio Canada’s Ici Musique as one of the top five female Jazz musicians to watch out for, French-American singer Laura Anglade is making a name for herself in the Jazz world. Laura’s singing is reminiscent of many of the great traditional vocal stylists of the 20th century including Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn, and Blossom Dearie, but her voice is uniquely her own. As she digs emotionally and eloquently into a lyric, her story-telling abilities portray a soul beyond her years.

Laura leads an active international touring schedule and has performed at venues including Olympia (Paris), Royal Festival Hall (London), Town Hall (New York City), the Ace Theatre Hotel (Los Angeles), and the main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. She opened for Gregory Porter at the Victoria Jazz Festival (summer 2022), and Melody Gardot (fall 2022), joining her across the east and west coasts of the US and Europe. She is currently based in Toronto.

Ben Solomon was a member of Wallace Roney’s Quintet from 2012-2017, which shaped his musical identity and experience. As Roney’s sideman he shared the stage with such legends as Buster Williams, Lenny White, Patrice Rushen, Ron Carter, and Gary Bartz. In 2016 he played two nights with Chick Corea at the Blue Note in New York. He has published two books of saxophone etudes called “Chromatophores”. In 2023 he appeared with the Aaron Parks quartet at the Village Vanguard. Adam Arruda is one of the most in demand drummers in New York City, having performed with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Mehldau, Greg Osby, 3WI, Dayna Stephens and many more. Montreal guitarist Mike Bruzzese presents this special band featuring New York’s finest for one night only.

With some fifty albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, he’s a 17-time Grammy Award nominee who continues to earn jazz’s most prestigious awards, including distinctions as a 2016 Doris Duke Artist and being named Jazz Pianist of the Year three times from the Jazz Journalists Association.

They approach standards from different eras, and are as likely to play a tune by Duke Ellington as one by Kamasi Washington. With jazz as the centrepiece, they navigate the waters of soul & funk as well – stopping along the way to play an original or two from time to time.

The brainchild of Brazilian bassist João Menegale Barbi, five young adults from Montréal form this eclectic group, “Zabumbe”. Featuring drummer Tom Yanez, guitarist Alex Muscalu, bassist João Menegale Barbi, trumpetist Johan Lee Meyer, and flutist Adelina Steinmetz, “Zabumbe” joins various members from different parts of the globe to pay homage to the rich tradition of Brazilian music. These songs explore the lush harmonies, intricate melodies and complex rhythms native to this South American country.

They combine the freedom and the energy of modern jazz with the beauty and the drive of styles like bossa nova, samba, baião, and ijexá. Each song is played to the limit and every performance, while significantly different from the last, does not fail to transport the audience both to a carnival party and to an acoustic guitar set.

Combining the talents of singer/actor Raoul Bhaneja and pianist/arranger Jesse Whiteley, Blue Standard has built a following and solid reputation in Toronto since the release of their debut recording “A Good Thing” in January 2019.

Inspired by some of the great male vocalists of jazz like Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Jimmy Scott, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and more, Blue Standard performs a selection of some familiar and many not so familiar classics digging into the core materials of top notch presentation… true melody, deep interpretation and most importantly, a real good time.

Bhaneja is known to audiences across Canada for this work on stage and screen and for his three decades of fronting Maple Blues Award winners Raoul and The Big Time, who made their long awaited debut at Upstairs Jazz in early 2024. Whiteley who also performs in The Big Time is from the first family of Canadian roots music, is a pianist, arranger, songwriter and singer in his own right, who works night after night in Toronto both on his own projects and as an in demand side man spanning blues, jazz, swing and even country music.

For this performance Blue Standard is thrilled to be joined by special guest Jody Golick, long time veteran of the Montreal blues and jazz scene including his many years in The Stephen Barry Band.

Guillaume Martineau has pursued many years of professional studies in classical piano. Guillaume as a classical pianist received many honors including winning first prize at the Canadian Music Competion in 2009 and the opportunity to be heard playing Chopin in the recent movie “Louis Cyr”.

At the age of 13, Guillaume made his first attempts in jazz as a classical pianist with introduction from bassist Éric Lagacé. Over ten years later, Guillaume meets Éric Lagacé once again together with Oliver Jones and finally decides to make a diving transition into the world of jazz. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Guillaume is now very active on Montreal’s music scene in many unique projects of his own.

Shawn McPherson is a Canadian blues harmonica player and singer. Having played the blues around Quebec since he was a young teen, he has already established himself as one of the great up-and-coming Canadian harmonica players and frontmen. With a booming voice and energetic stage presence, your attention will be drawn-in from the first note.

Heavily influenced by authentic Chicago bluesmen such as Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and Big Walter Horton, Shawn and his band play authentic Chicago Blues. Using period-correct instruments, microphones, and amplifiers, you’ll be taken back in time to the juke joints of the early 1950s.

Juno Award-winning Singer-Songwriter Dawn Tyler Watson has earned her place among the International Blues elite. She adopted Montreal as her home after earning her BFA in Jazz Studies and Theatre from Concordia University.

Since then, her fiery stage presence and soul-stirring performances have garnered her national and world-wide recognition with multiple awards including Maple Blues Awards for Songwriter, Best Album, Female Vocalist of the Year, and a 2020 American Blues Music Nomination for Vocalist of the Year alongside greats like Curtis Salgado & Mavis Staples.

Her latest record “Mad Love,” was just awarded the 2020 JUNO award for Blues Album of the Year.

Josh is a JUNO nominated (Nikky Yanofsky 2008) pianist/organist, arranger, composer, and teacher based in Montreal, Canada. Throughout his 20-year career he has performed extensively in Japan, Europe, and North America. In 2005 he was nominated for the Prix du Festival at the Montreal International Jazz festival. In 2007 he played Carnegie Hall with Nikky Yanofsky appearing also on her JUNO nominated debut DVD/CD “Ella…I swing of thee”. In 2009 he received a commission from The European Broadcasting Union to compose a jazz suite for two pianos which was recorded by CBC at its premiere and broadcast internationally.

His 2018 album “Dreams and Other Stories” was nominated for Jazz Album of the Year by ADISQ. In addition to his own projects, Josh is an in-demand sideman performing with visiting national and international artists and appearing. Josh is also a dedicated educator at Concordia University where he is associate professor. Some of the names that Josh has performed and/or recorded with include: Ingrid Jensen, Walt Weiskopf, Lage Lund, Donny McCaslin, Ed Cherry, Steve Davis, Ira Coleman, Joe Morrello, Pat Labarbera, Kevin Dean, Kirk MacDonald.

Alex is an up and coming working musician on the local scene. He can be found playing many styles of music across many genres all over town but always with an improvisatory focus. He has played alongside many Montreal and international luminaries such as Kevin Dean, Sam Kirmayer, Mike Bruzzese, Frank Lozano, Levi Dover, Yur Yesli, Jihye Im, Baron Tymas, Fraser Hollins, Greg Amirault, Mathieu Soucy and Alex LeBlanc among others.

A powerhouse jazz vocalist and composer from Vancouver Island, known for her impressive vocal range and knack for scat. With sold-out shows across the coast and a return to Montreal’s Upstairs Jazz Club, she brings swing, soul, and sharp lyricism to the stage.

Her latest single “A Gal in Calico” channels classic swing with a bluesy edge, while her original composition “You Just Can’t Hide” delivers bebop bite and heartbreak heat. Both tracks will be appearing on her debut album “It’s Pronounced Cooch”, which she’ll showcase live through original compositions and fresh takes on timeless standards.

Originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Ryan Bennett is an up-and-coming drummer who communicates his love for music through swing, groove, and exciting music. Based in Montréal and now a recent graduate of the Schulich School of Music, Ryan was trained by some of the very best including Darrell Green, Ira Coleman, and Montréal’s very own Jim Doxas.

Tenor saxophonist Benny Sharoni is a bandleader, composer and arranger and is a mainstay on the U.S. and International jazz scenes where he has played with many of today’s jazz greats, including David Hazeltine, Jim Rotondi and George Garzone. Sharoni fuses together classic bop influences of Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Steve Grossman, and flavors his music with Latin rhythms and an energetic drive.

Tomer, Itai and Kulusé decided to reunite their fearless trio after two years living in different countries. Their friendship and the very special chemistry they developed playing in New-York is a message of hope to the world.

They invited the great Canadian piano player John Roney for an exclusive tour in which each musician will write new music as well as bring music from their own albums.
Grounded in the jazz tradition, their music also takes from folk and middle east influences, as well as from the actual vibrant New-York scene.
The band will be touring Québec this August, giving you an unique chance to catch them in Canada.

Sophianne Girard is a young jazz singer and composer from Montreal. Even as a child, she sang her heart out. She performed in a choir, then in a musical theater troupe, and eventually specialized as a soloist and composer while studying at CEGEP* Marie-Victorin and McGill University in the jazz program.

Her first album, For Some Reason, was released in the fall of 2022. She performed at FestiJazz of Mont-Tremblant in the Relève section and at T.U.JazzFest in Toronto in the summer of 2022. She’s one of the three finalists of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (worldwide composition competition), with her song For Some Reason, in the Jazz category. She also released a live album EP titled Live at Opus Studios in January 2023. She’s currently working on her second album. Sophianne has her own musical esthetic. Her compositions are mostly modern and modal.

This summer she’ll perform at the Festival Québec Jazz en Juin, at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal where she’ll open for John Pizzarelli, at the Théâtre Maisonneuve and at various venues in the province of Québec.

Sophianne’s bright and clear voice has a ”je ne sais quoi” that leaves you wanting more!

Formed with bassist Levi Dover and drummer Mark Nelson, pianist Gentiane MG’s ensemble pushes the limits of the jazz trio through the creation of unique, contemporary and original sonorities. Each in their own right a virtuosic instrumentalist and passionate improviser, the three musicians collaborate to create a universe of pure communication which provides each concert with a constantly renewed energy that captivates the audience.
In support of their latest release, the band has performed over fifty times, touring in countries such as Canada, Mexico, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and France, including impressive performances at the Echternach Jazz Festival in Luxembourg, the Unterfahrt Jazz Club in Munich, the Opus Jazz Club in Budapest and the Sunside Jazz Club in Paris.

Gentiane MG has released three albums with this ensemble, Eternal Cycle (Arté Boréal, 2017), Wonderland (Effendi, 2019) and Walls Made of Glass (TPR Records, 2022).
Gentiane MG’s music has earned her numerous awards, including the Révélation Radio-Canada Award, the price François-Marcaurelle from the Guilde des musiciens du Québec (2019), the Opus, Artist of the Year (2020) and Best Jazz Album of the Year (2023). Her latest album also earned her nominations at ADISQ (Quebec) and JUNO (Canada) 2024.

Taurey Butler is a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre.

Hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, he has played in numerous cities across the world from Hong Kong to New York and now makes his home in Montréal. Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.

Juno Award-winning Singer-Songwriter Dawn Tyler Watson has earned her place among the International Blues elite. She adopted Montreal as her home after earning her BFA in Jazz Studies and Theatre from Concordia University.

Since then, her fiery stage presence and soul-stirring performances have garnered her national and world-wide recognition with multiple awards including Maple Blues Awards for Songwriter, Best Album, Female Vocalist of the Year, and a 2020 American Blues Music Nomination for Vocalist of the Year alongside greats like Curtis Salgado & Mavis Staples.

Her latest record “Mad Love,” was just awarded the 2020 JUNO award for Blues Album of the Year.

Julian Gutierrez’s new quartet, featuring Dany Roy, Richard Irwin, and Jonathan-Guillaume Boudreau, is a meeting point between tradition and modernity.
